# Compact Ethernet Network Extender

Often, one finds themselves in a situation where they need to interconnect networks between two points beyond the limit allowed by the Ethernet standard.
In these cases, there are normally two solutions:

- laying a fiber optic cable that allows covering much greater distances at high speed
- using a Wi-Fi connection between two points

Each of these solutions introduces some inherent difficulties/problems:

- fiber requires laying a new, more expensive cable and needs specific equipment at both ends (media converter, switch with SFP interface). Furthermore, terminating fiber requires the presence of qualified personnel equipped with adequate tools
- radio connection is more affected by external disturbances and requires the two points to be connected to have optical line-of-sight

A solution to utilize a classic 8-pole Ethernet cable and reach 1500m distance is possible thanks to **Mikrotik's GPeR *devices***.

The Gigabit Passive Ethernet Repeater (GPeR) aims to replace GPON installations with alternative Ethernet distributions at lower costs and easier implementation.

The GPeR unit allows extending the Ethernet cable by an additional hop (<100 - 150 m between normal network devices and up to 210 m between GPeR units) up to 1500 m.

Convenient for skyscrapers, multi-apartment buildings, with many floors and sections, where very long Ethernet cables could be a problem.

The maximum allowed length of CAT6 Ethernet cable between GPeR and power supply is up to 100 m (depending on cable quality, high quality - up to 150 m).

The maximum allowed length of CAT6 Ethernet cable between two GPeR devices is 210 m (depending on cable quality).
