One of the most pressing issues in network communications recently is the shortage of public IPv4 addresses.
Currently, the term IoT, Internet of Things, is very popular, and more and more devices are connected and have internet access: smartphones, tablets, but also cars, refrigerators, dishwashers, televisions, ... and so on.

Many of these devices connect to the internet via a cellular connection, thanks to a SIM card from a telephone operator.
At the time of connection, this operator must assign an IP address to the device to allow it to communicate on the network.
Initially, this address was DYNAMIC and PUBLIC: meaning it was always assigned differently with each connection, but it was reachable via the internet from any other IP address.

With the increasing demand for IP addresses, operators had to take action and created local area networks (LANs) distributed across the territory.
By doing so, when a new device connects to the network, it is no longer assigned a DYNAMIC and PUBLIC address, but rather a DYNAMIC and PRIVATE one.
To draw an analogy with classic private networks in the office or at home, the operator has a "router" (like a home ADSL router) that has a public IP address, while the various devices are assigned a private address in the subnet of this router.

To reach your devices remotely, if these are cellular routers connected to your automation system, there are only two possibilities:

- request the telephone operator to assign a public IP address for each of your SIMs (M2M or DeNAT)
- **have a VPN infrastructure that allows reaching the routers through a protected, encrypted, and private connection**
