# Interfacing to Meterbus (M-Bus) Devices - **Language:** EN - **Published on:** 2014-08-19 # Interfacing to Meterbus (M-Bus) Devices **M-Bus** (**Meter-Bus**) is a European standard (EN 13757-2 physical and link layer, EN 13757-3 application layer) for remote reading of gas or electricity meters. The M-Bus protocol can also be used for other types of consumption meters. The M-Bus interface was developed for two-wire communication, which makes it very convenient. A radio variant M-Bus (Wireless M-Bus) is specified in EN 13757-4. The M-Bus protocol was developed to meet the need for a system for remote meter reading, for example, to measure gas or water consumption in a home. This bus meets the special requirements of battery-powered or remote systems. When queried, meters must provide the collected data to a common master, such as a laptop, which requests data at periodic intervals to read all meters in a building. The Meterbus bus, as mentioned, is based on a shielded twisted pair connection. Speeds are very low to cover long distances: commonly used speeds are 300 bps and 2400 bps. The bus is powered by the master which, by imposing a voltage between -12VDC and +35VDC across the two wires, powers the communication interface of the devices: each slave has a specified current draw of 1.5mA. Therefore, the master is dimensioned to power a certain maximum number of devices. ## Level Converters They convert the physical level from serial to Meterbus.
