TIBBO Microcontroller DS100B RS232-422-485 to ETH

The DS100B acts as a “Serial Device Server”; it allows you to connect any peripheral with RS232/RS422/RS485 output format to an Ethernet LAN.
Communication with the peripheral can occur from any PC connected to the local network; furthermore, if the latter has an Internet connection, the serial device can also become accessible from any external computer.
This way, you can place the peripheral wherever you like, connect it to the DS100B, and connect the latter to the LAN hub, using cables that, according to specifications, can be up to 100 meters long.
The DS100B is equipped with a 10BaseT port to connect to the LAN at a speed of 10Mbit/s and a universal RS232/RS422/RS485 port to connect to the peripheral. It has a power jack for power supply (which is 12 V DC with a current consumption of 150 mA) and several LEDs to indicate the device status or Ethernet connection.
It also comes with drivers for proper operation in a Windows environment and some management and programming software.

 

The applications in which it can be used are fundamentally of three types: the first is to connect a serial peripheral without modifying an already existing control software. The DS100R driver is indeed able to create virtual COM ports on the PC (VSPs-Virtual Serial Ports) which, from the program and user's point of view, behave like standard hardware COM ports, but which in reality transform the data into TCP packets sent over the LAN that are then converted by the DS100R into serial format.
Alternatively, it is possible to easily create new management software, through which to communicate directly with the peripheral, without using VSPs. The DS100R uses UDP/IP and TCP/IP transmission protocols for which many programming languages and compilers (for example Microsoft's Visual Basic 6.0) already have management plug-ins available. For VB6 itself, Tibbo provides a manual explaining how to communicate with the DS100R.
Finally, using two DS100Rs, it is possible to connect two serial peripherals that use the Ethernet connection to create a “Virtual Serial Link,” meaning a connection that appears serial to the peripherals, but which is actually based on Ethernet technology. For example, by connecting the first DS100R to a PC's COM port and the second to a peripheral's serial port, and connecting the two Ethernet interfaces via a direct RJ45 cable, it is possible to simulate a normal serial connection to the software, but which in reality leverages Ethernet technology and TCP protocols. In this case, it is not even necessary to use VSPs; instead, you will access directly from the hardware COM ports.
Moreover, if you have an ADSL connection, you can connect the DS100R's Ethernet port directly to it; in this simple way, the peripheral becomes accessible from any PC connected to the Internet.
The DS100R is also characterized by 3 different operating modes:
-one for serial-to-Ethernet conversion and vice versa (Normal Mode);
-one for programming it via serial port (Serial Programming Mode);
-one used to perform firmware upgrade (Firmware Download Mode).
The latter two are special modes that are not used for normal applications (for more details, however, clear and complete manuals are available). The first one is the most interesting and commonly used.
